I am a 36yr old female. I was diagnosed at 21 because my father has this disease. I recognize alot of the symptoms now, but I was wondering about muscle twitching. Is this common in people with MD?

Jeffrey age 11 often complains about pains in his legs or around his ankles. I have to rub the muscle to relieve the discomfort. I believe that he is suffering from muscle spasms and dosen't know it.

My husband has myotonic dystrophy and he has muscle twitching when asleep. He just puts up with it but sometimes he jerks quite badly and wakes himself up. I guess this is quite common going by what his specialist says. The doctor didn't offer any treatment for these spasms but he does find that taking paracetamol usually helps - not every time though.

I also have twitching and muscle spasms. i went for a sleep study for sleep apnea and was diagnosed with periodic limb movements I also wake my self up when I jerk soon after falling asleep that could be what your husband has there is a treatment for it I have not been treated because my doctor retired and I'm between doctors right now you may want to talk to your neurologist.

Reading these comments clicks with some symptoms i have.

I often spasm when im asleep, my leg practically kicks the air, and wakes myself and partner up. This can happen if I have only been asleep for mere minutes.

I have also experienced shooting pains from time to time.  Occassionally I will be on the train for my morning commute to work and a sudden bolt of pain will affect my legs or knee...really quite painful and seemingly random.

With any pains I get, the only comfort is to just rub the muscle and try to calm yourself down from the intial shock.

I dont see this is a big affect on my life, as it is random...though I have just started to notice symptoms a lot more now that im in my late twenties.
