Does anybody know how prevalent autism is with this disorder. By that I mean, what percentage of people with this disease are also autistic or show characteristics of autism? I think the kids I work with who have MD are also autistic.  We are pretty sure, but we don't have an official diagnosis.

Cant find a lot on it but a paper from the university of Ghotenberg in 2009 showed that ,from a study of 59 children and adolescents with dm1, 49% had an 'autism spectrum condition' and 35% of those affected were diagnosed with 'autistic disorder' so seems pretty high.

heres the pdf file link to the paper.

http://gupea.ub.gu.se/bitstream/2077/19387/4/gupea_2077_19387_4.pdf

interestingly the same piece also goes onto say DM1 can be pretty much traced back to ancient egypt with the pharoah Akhenaton (a pharoah before the much better know tutankhamen) in around 1300 bc!!

it also states that the artist Monet was a sufferer of DM1 (as proved in dna of a late relative) and its affects were probably contributory to his amazing art.

Okay,so i know that info wont actually help anyone but i think its nice to know that sufferers are in some very good historic company!

pookie.
